Services Provided
The pharmacists are responsible for:
- Dispensing prescriptions for patients both whilst they are on a ward
and when they leave hospital. Prescriptions are also dispensed to patients
attending clinics, the casualty department and day hospitals.
- Providing information about medication. Pharmacists can advise
when, how much and how often medicines should be taken, and whether it
should be on a regular basis or as needed, or for a short course
or long term.
- Assisting patients in taking their medication correctly by
providing medication charts or tablets set out in memory aid containers.
-
Checking prescription charts
on the wards to ensure medicines are used effectively. The technicians
ensure that medicines are available on the wards for patients.
- Distributing up to date information about medicines,
and answering questions from doctors and nurses. Pharmacists help to write
policies relating to looking after medicines in the hospital and arrange
talks and training for nurses. They also have links with other colleagues
and specialists and can also obtain information from manufacturers.
-
Providing advice about side effects of medicines. Ensuring doses are
appropriate, and checking for interactions between medicines.
- Generating reports of medicine usage and analysing how much each ward
and department has spent on medicines.
