Adult Speech and Language Therapy Department
What is Speech and Language Therapy?
- Assessment and treatment of difficulties with speech, voice and language
- Assessment
and treatment of problems associated with eating/drinking/swallowing
Speech
and language therapists assess, diagnose and treat people who have acquired
communication and/or swallowing disorders.
Therapists also offer advice
and support to assist people to overcome or minimise the difficulties
they encounter as a result of their condition.
Patients are usually seen on a one to one basis but may sometimes be seen
within a group. At the first meeting the speech and language therapist
assesses the difficulties a patient may be experiencing through observation,
discussion and by using a range of tests.
Following
assessment, which could continue over a number of sessions, speech and
language therapists devise a treatment programme tailored to the patient’s
needs. This may be carried out over a long period of time, whereby specific
exercises are used and strategies taught to enable the patient to communicate
to their full potential.
Our Vision Statement:
